The objective of the paper is to draw up a concept of restoration for an Italian guitar from the mid-19 century which is unplayable because of its fragile condition. The object of restoration is approached on the basis of scientific preliminary examination regarding its condition at present, its design and material. Inquiries about history and style of the guitar concerning the particular epoch slip in the discussion as well as the problems of making fragile historical instruments playable in order to bring about the original sound of the epoch. The concept which could stretch from playable restoration to pure conservation is intended to be carried out and documented in detail.
